Because there are rules about their overbooking when you agree to buy a ticket. So it sucks, but you got bumped. What's unclear to me (which is why I'm not like 75% on the airlines side) is that once you are on the plane can they still bump you for overbooking. Usually this happens at the gate.

The airlines response after has been cold corporate speak so they are doing a terrible PR job. I don't even think they apologized to the guy for busting his face open other than to say he was unruly which rubs me the wrong way.

It doesn't matter if those are the rules because those rules fucking suck. I'm glad we're finally getting a discussion about this, and I hope United gets sued to hell
