The zombie's desire to "eat" humans seems always be a side effect of the virus's need to procreate. The eating is simply how the virus is able to transmit itself from one host to another, rather than the zombie outbreaks way of sustenance/survival.

If all the humans/living beings were zombified, the survival of the zombies themselves would be tied to the life cycle of the initial virus (if it has one) I guess.
