"If I may, could I ask why it's 'was' for Trigon? I don't imagine the 'ultimate demon of evil and rage' just... passing away."

Raven looks crestfallen again, but she takes a deep breath.

"Trigon, being that he was the ultimate demon of evil," she says, "was not of this dimension, but of his own. As such, he needed a way into this world. And that way in, was me. As I grew up in Azarath, I was watched closely, for many monks thought I might become evil like my father. One monk, Juris, even tried throwing me into Limbo as a child, but it backfired and he was the one struck down by the void.

"Azar, the elder spiritual leader of the temple, privately tutored me in my meditation, empathic abilities, astral projection, teleportation, as well as the way of pacifism and how to control of my emotions, in an effort to resist Trigon's power and influence.

"But after Azar passed away, Trigon assaulted my mind with prophetic dreams. It got to the point that he wouldn't let me sleep, the visions were so vivid and terrifying. So despite what my teachers said, I confronted Trigon in Limbo via astral projection. He told me he wasn't going to harm me or my mother, for he was satisfied knowing that once I 'reached adulthood', he could use me as his portal into this world, and how the thought of that would haunt me."

Hearing all this, this tale of prophecy, fear and pain, your entire life is put into perspective. Every moment of disdain for your namesakes, every time you didn't want to live up to the name just to spite the family, every time you wish you weren't the one shouldering the main line, it all seems so petty in comparison.

"Oh, Raven," you say as you hug her tightly again. "I can't imagine every going through that."

"W-Wait," she says with a slight giggle. "Let me finish the story before you hug me."

"Yes, right, sorry," you say as you let go.

"When I turned 14," Raven continues, "I sensed Trigon's power growing stronger, and fearing for Azarath's safety, I fled here to Earth, birthplace of my mother."

"Oh your mother is of Earth?"

"Yes, her real name is Angela Roth, which technically means my name would be Raven Roth, but that's not that important. It was at that time that I met the others, defeated the Gordanians and formed the Teen Titans. We had our adventures and 'saved the day', all of it helping me feel I could be something more than just 'the daughter of Trigon.' But then, as if Trigon was playing some sick joke, it was on my way to 'sweet sixteen' that he started creeping in stronger than ever.

"It was my exact birthday, the day I turned sixteen, that Trigon raised the dead--an enemy of ours that had died in a cave-in--to be his emissary. That itself was an intense experience for everyone. Then, within about a month or so after that incident, Trigon arranged things through his emissary, like pieces on a chess board. At the time, I felt cornered, and saw no choice but to go along with his plan.

"However, just like in chess, I managed to keep my friends in play, knowing they'd fight against Trigon. And best of all, Robin managed to find what was left of my consciousness, reunited me with everyone, and with my powers restored and even strengthened, I vanquished Trigon, and was finally free. I even visited my mother in Azarath to celebrate!"

"That's wonderful!" you say with a big smile.

You and Raven smile at each other.

"You can hug me now," she giggles.

"Oh right."

You give her a big hug, that she returns just as tightly.

"When is your birthday?" you ask as you let go again.
