The KKK originally supported the Southern Democrats, and the Republicans were the relatively liberal party in comparison. Republicans nominated Barry Goldwater for president to run against Lyndon Baines Johnson in 1964. Goldwater only won his home state of Arizona and five states in the Deep South, depicted in red.
