Haven't played the game, but this does sound better than what it was before. Having the character immediately announce that they're trans just makes it seem like that's their defining trait, reducing the whole character to their gender, which isn't good.

One thing I liked about Steve in ME3 is that he never flat out announced he was gay, at least iirc. Just during one conversation, he brings up his husband. He wasn't like "Hey Shepard, I'm the gay guy". He was the pilot who happened to be gay. Not the gay guy who happened to be the pilot.
