"Raven, I... I want to tell you all of this, sincerely and completely," you begin. "But I also know this will be a lot to handle because we only just met, so bear with me."

"Um... alright," she says nervously.

"Okay," you say. "So, I told you about the family's status within the magical community, yes? That we're somewhere between celebrity and nobility?"

She silently nods "yes."

"Not to give the whole story away in one sentence," you say, "but it has a lot to do with the events involving Rorek the Fifth."

Her eyes open wide, already seeing where your story is going.

"Now, while the family let Rorek the Fifth marry Ruth Anne Chestnut, the tradition of elite families marrying elite families didn't stop. I would like to point out that Ruth Anne herself was of a well-to-do family, the Chestnuts. While not in the top five, or even the top ten, maybe not even top 25, the Chestnuts were of the upper class. So, as I said in telling his story, the other families were upset but had no choice but to accept, it was still within the agreed social standard.

"The tradition returned a generation later, and all families agreed to be more civil and hands-off about it. They'd be social, making sure their children met each other, and the other families had fingers crossed their child would be the one the child of Null fell in love with, and so it became more like a... a lottery of love."

Raven already looks gloomy and sick, but you have to continue the story.

"Things went on like this, for generations," you say. "No real uproar as no courting outside of the social circles of upperclass, elite and-or magical families happened. Then came time when my grandfather, Rorek the Sixth, was born. He lived in this same circle, had friends from these elite families as well as love interests, but then the second World War came just as he was turning 18.

"He enlisted, fought alongside friends from those elite and magical families, had his adventures alongside the American soldier, and then met my grandmother, Ruth, during a phase when he was recovering from an injury during those battles. They fell in love, and he stood up for her when the other families complained. Ruth was not of a wealthy, noble or magical family, she was a complete 'normie', and yet Rorek the Sixth loved her and no one was going to stop him."

Rorek looks absolutely dreadful by this point because she's already feeling the point of the story coming.

"However, the tradition continued," you say, dreading these words yourself. "My father, Ronald, was courted, and by the time he was 18, he had fallen in love with my mother, Rachel Goggin. The Goggins were among the upperclass as well as the magical families, so everyone was satisfied."

Raven gets up, magical aura swirling around and making her own hair stand on end.

"I need some air," she says as she quickly heads to the side door.

"Um, miss?" a waitress says.

"Raven, wait," you say.

You get up, stop to put $30 down, then head to the same door.

"I'll be right back, I still want to finish those pancakes," you say quickly before going through the door.

"Raven," you call to her as you catch up to her. "Raven, please, I need--"
