Maybe it's still Sonic when Eggman uses them. Maybe Sonic is breaking the 4th wall by announcing it to the player.
Can't be Sonic, because Classic Planet Wisp in Sonic Generations still has "SPIKES!" voiceovers despite Classic Sonic being explicitly mute.
