^The song is pretty bad by itself, yeah. But when you pair it with the opening animation it blends together so well to make this perfect little opening sequence that just... works. I could apply that to a lot of things though. Lucky Star's OP blows without the animation, Melancholy of Haruhi's ED is average without the accompanying dance, you get the idea.
