Odds are, your Macbook is going to last longer than a laptop from those two companies as well.
Going by entirely by my experience, it's basically random how long your laptop will last. The point here is that you believe that a Mac will last longer. That matters way more than reality.
I wouldn't say weight and battery life are insignificant
They're not. You also don't need to sacrifice these to get a cheaper laptop.
It's not a case of 'everything is overpriced' or 'everything is worth it.' Apple are a company just like any other - some products are great, some aren't.
iPods are fairly priced and worth it, sure. Every other product they make I would call overpriced. Macbooks more than anything, but iPhones, iPads as well. iPads in particular are "competitively priced" but that's only because Apple created an environment where tablets have to be $500. That's a whole separate issue though.
