Name a star who actually got any reasonable amount of success who looks like a bum or scrawny. CM Punk is the closest example you've got at this point. But it's not all about what the bigwigs will give you opportunity-wise-- there's credibility concerns there too. More credible guys are gonna get more reactions from the crowd (and casual viewers) in the bigger storylines that's just how it is. You put Christian vs The Undertaker and I don't care how strongly Christian's been booked leading into that point a lot of people aren't going to give him a chance to win.
The look matters because suspending disbelief matters in wrestling.
Then Rey Rey should have never won one single match outside of the cruiserweight division (which I actually agree with). However, Christian is larger than your average man, he is not a giant like Undertaker, but he is still a nice size, and in great shape.
