Nothing completely surpasses Custom weaponry unless you let it. I've upgraded my Ancient Lightsaber repeatedly since getting it, using DK Commendations, Balmorra Commendations, buying Cybertech upgrades, etc...
It was cheaper to take the new dark II customizable that already had better upgrades and a higher damage than it was to buy different upgrades (which I can actually afford now since the commendation gear on the last couple planets have sucked).
