With increased centralization comes more variance in performance, which means increased global instability as the dips in the economy become more and more catastrophic, more and more dissatisfaction results in more conflict and potential terrorist candidates. Tie it into another economic disaster such as drought, peak oil or a pandemic and whatever the Great Depression was would look small in comparison.
