I would love that. May is in a contest, and a guy whose only characterization is "black hair" defeats her, and she just moves on and never mentions it again.

This sort of does happen to Dawn, if you count "making it past the appeals round" to be defeating all of the contestants that didn't. I don't think May ever failed to make it past the first round, because Dawn had to go through a lot of suffering as a beginner even though May had never even heard of Pokémon Contests before going on her journey with Ash and Dawn is the daughter of a famous coordinator.
Yeah, I know! I was just watching DP on CN the other day and Dawn had a contest in which she thought she did well. And then they started showing pics of the coordinators advancing to the second round and as they reached the last blank spot they paused to create drama and such. I laughed so, SO hard when nameless dude's face came up instead of Dawn's. SO HARD! And they did that not once, but twice! I didn't laugh the second time. I just felt sad because she tried to play it off like she was fine. Then she cried as soon as she got out of eyesight of her friends. Made me feel guilty for laughing the first time. :(
