Just to expand on the weapon thing. The power and speed stats refers to the type of weapons. So someone with a high power and low speed could use weapons like the greatsword or pike well while being SOL with the twin swords. There is no way to change this outside of buying extra speed and power with SP. When you see a darkened out star on certain weapons that means you could buy the stat and that character to make them proficient with it. When a power weapon has 3 stars it gains extra range in the form of a whirlwind and a speed weapon gets what's like a jump cancel which aids in escape+combos. Men can't use/buy whips and women can't use/buy greatswords. Keep this in mind if you're trying to get all weapons. I think that combined with what's been said is pretty much everything you might want to know about weapons.
