GotD was the first contest I participated in GameFAQs and I was able to sneak into the #11 spot of the guru, mostly thanks to have watched KP's bracket plus adding my own modifications, (like Brawl > Melee, MP > HL2, MM > G/S/C, hehehe...). I've never participated in a Character Battle, so I have no freaking clue as to what characters are more popular than others, or how do their popularity fluctuates throughout the years, so...
Just go to the B8 wiki and run wild. Almost every little piece of evidence you'd want on characters can be found there.
