If you project our own values onto the mer-people, I suppose there's nothing wrong with them eating sea creatures, considering we eat all manners of land creatures. However, the general impression is that mer-people are one with the sea and all its fauna, so they refrain from eating any animals.
I'd say their diet is restricted to sea vegetation, which is a testament to Triton's bulk because how the hell can someone get that huge eating seaweed.
