Although the original Games was a bit more predictable than either Characters contest has been as far as that goes, but I don't think anyone would've really thought FFVII had a realistic shot of winning or even getting to the finals.
Weird considering FFVII was a 2-seed, but you're right, no one was giving it much of a chance. Probably because FFVII is usually the one being upset (FFVII/AC 2003, anyone?)
