Whoa, there's a report from CES. This was the big event of the year since e3 didn't exist yet.

Here's the CES report. It looks like ninja games were to 1989 as FPS games are to 2011. There's a MM2 screenshot there. The LJN breaking news is pretty funny as well.
Ha, Milon's Secret Castle is so hard that they put a section in called 'getting started'.
Top 30 -
Lots of movement. Contra hits the top 5, Blades of Steel shows up, Milon's Secret Castle promptly crushes everybody and slides a dozen spots. Everyone realizes Metal Gear is terrible and drops it 20 spots. Mega Man 2 sighting in the top 30 despite no coverage whatsoever and not being out for another few months. Mario 2 is still owning faces.
