Oh, I thought of another good tip. There are other NPCs who will move to your world if you build rooms for them to stay in. They need a certain amount of space in the room, an 10x5 room should suffice, with a piece of furniture (I just use a chair) and a table of some sort, and a light source. You also need to achieve certain goals for them to move in, which the Guide will mention specifically if you talk to him enough.
Oh, and make sure you make background walls for your buildings.
