Celes > Locke > Edgar > Sabin > Terra > Shadow > everyone else, as far as the heroes go.
FFVI is only going to build up until...a certain point, I suppose, and so will Kefka, into the greatest VG character of all time! On a side note, why are my two favorite Square characters both "bad guys" (Kefka and Magus)? Yes I know FFVI and CT are the only two Square games I've played, but I've heard that characterization actually tapers off in Square's later titles, and the board seems to agree.
While I was playing through FFVI I was actually kinda thinking about how much better the scenes could be in "HD", but I was gradually turned over to the opposite view, and now I think I'm fully converted. Perhaps watching a certain 2011 movie that was essentially all flashy effects and no substance left a bad taste in my mouth for modern-day stuff.
