But the Zelda series hasn't produced a real GotY contender in a decade IMO

You're not wrong here, and I'm not sure many people would take umbrage at someone saying Wind Waker and Twilight Princess weren't the absolute best games of their respective years. There was a lot of things I liked about both titles, but there were a few issues with each of them. More TP than WW, really. I dunno, I could be wrong, but Skyward Sword looks like it might finally brake out of the Zelda funk Nintendo has been in since the two N64 games. I love the art style (Zelda's nose notwithstanding), the combat looks engaging, and it doesn't look like an OoT clone. I'm pretty hyped for this game.

Xenoblade is out of consideration to begin with in my mind.

I might agree with you if this were Mother 3, but Xenoblade is already translated, and it's easily available to anyone who owns a Wii. Nintendo of America is dumb for not releasing it here, but we can still play it. And soon!

I think your criticism of Zelda could be thrown at Bethesda, too. After Morrowind, Bethesda offered two lame vanilla experiences. The only game on that engine I think is truly great was the game Obsidian made last year, New Vegas. This isn't stopping me from anticipating Skyrim, though. Bethesda, like Nintendo, are showing me all the right things.

Guess we'll find out in November!
