Not if it is something that is a standard any company could create. It's more like DVD than PlayStation.
That's basically what a PC is. There used to be dozens of different computers, all completely incompatible with each other, until IBM defined a standard that other manufacturers could use. That's why a lot of old PC games have "for IBM Compatibles" on the packaging.
