For all the people screaming "hypocrite": relax. Those of us who are skeptical about this new direction have every right to be given how disappointing Brawl was. It's not just the slow, campy mechanics or utter lack of balance; even the single player elements were botched. Items weren't nearly as fun. Pokeballs were bland. Event mode wasn't nearly as interesting. No unique target tests, and a more limited selection of single-player modes. The one "improvement" was the SSE, an embarrassing display of mismanaged priorities that was a black hole of development time and resources.

If by "focusing on improving gameplay" Sakurai means having a 45-50 character roster with no clones, more varied single player options, more stages, and more / better items, then I'd be thrilled. If, instead, he means another overlong adventure mode, more tired gimmicks, and more needless collectibles, then that's another matter altogether. Based on his track record, guess which is more likely?

The former, minus 50 characters. Without him, KI:U doesn't exist, neither does Kirby, nor Melee, nor...I could go on and on. Evidence is not in your favor, it's against it.

Kirby Super Star is a top-ten game ever in my books, so I'm hardly anti-Sakurai. But his ability to direct a good fighting game has hardly been proven. Melee was a great game (although the quality of its mechanics were accidental). Brawl was a colossal disappointment. Small sample size to work with, but given the direction Brawl took, it's hardly unfair to remain skeptical.

And seriously, LOL @ using KI:U as evidence that Sakurai will make another good fighting game.

Who's to say that he hasn't taken a look at customer opinion and is making adjustments based on that?

Fact of the matter is, Brawl very well could be an outlier
