As much as we might all love the middle evolution more he did succeed more as unmasked Kane.
He was unmasked Kane for longer!
And besides, it's masked Kane. It's one of those "better than the alternative by default" things
Well exactly. As a starter, his middle form only lasts like 10-15 levels. The subsequent 50 have no mask.
Kane with the Iron Mask is an optional Stone evolution that arguably makes him worse.
