He just really didn't have much going on in the first season.
Well he changed a bit by then.
I was talking more about the earlier episodes, especially the ones that centred around the relationship with him and Annie - a relationship that was nixed by the end of Season 1. In those early episodes he acted a lot more like a dumb jock than he did in S2/S3.
Just watch the way he acts in that episode where him and Britta are secretly dancing and stuff for example..
