Think about it. Imagine a world where every other pokemon but rhyhorn goes extinct and through SCIENCE! rhyhorn adapts to fill in every other pokemon's niche.

There's plenty of cases where, say, lizards on neighbouring islands are pure carnivore on one, and pure herbivore on another.
And then there's Madagascar, where the trees are actually evolved from like...dasies because there were no trees there before.
