Very short version:

Ukraine used to be part of Russia, but isn't now. It has Russian minorities in some of its eastern territory and Crimea, and Putin likes to collect Russian minorities in different countries like trading cards.

And don't ever call it "the Ukraine" because the implication there is that it's just a region of Russia or the Soviet Union and not a sovereign country.
