He was wrong ... By the winter of 1919-1920, Americans were weary of the limitations on daily life. Nearly all of the public health restrictions - such as mask-wearing, social distancing and the closure of schools and churches - had been lifted. A hasty return to public gatherings led to an increase in case numbers. Politicians either blamed people's carelessness for the re-emergence of the virus or downplayed the seriousness of it.
