He got famous for what initially seemed to be positive messages, a sort of proxy father figure for directionless, angry young men. That was fine.

Then he did the Ayn Rand thing of somehow connecting this innocuous messages to bullshit like "and this is why women shouldn't be scientists".

edit: I should say that he came into public notice with the former, and really became (in)famous with the latter.
