You think that everyone who brutally murders someone for no real reason beyond "my perception of the way the world works demands I do it" is going to be changed in any way by punishment that's more lenient than the act they committed in the first place?

Like I said, it's not always the best course of action, and in fact more often than not it isn't, but some monsters just need to be expunged by whatever means necessary.
