This is true, however what we have discovered in the past few decades is that opioids actually worsen your sensation of pain over time due to the way your body adapts to the presence of opioids. You can eventually become so dependent on opioids that simply not taking them results in pain even if there's no reason to have pain. And that's a really big problem that we need to learn how to fix.

It's not the person taking the medication who is at fault, though. And that's what really bothers me about the narrative regarding opiates. People who take opiates aren't criminals (usually). They are people with pain.
