I fail to see how waiting it out would have been a better plan as opposed to the above.

I dont see how riding out a crash is better if you suspect it'll crash even more.
i don't see how you can tell before you sell that it will go down, and that you can repurchase the same stocks at all reduced costs? every time i tried to do that in the past, the price went up after i sold. your plan will work if you know what will happen, but no one knows what'll happen. how do you know what you sell will go down, and will not recover more than your sale price before you buy back in?
