Native west Virginian here. Also a graduate degree holder in American government. I think you badly misunderstand politics in the state. Look at the state legislature. Look at the governor although he ran as a Democrat in his first election.

BBB might be individually popular in thr state but that doesnt outweigh the public's overall conservative lean.

WV was formerly a labor Democrat stronghold. Labor dems like guns and some other conservative values. The labor unions died and the coal miners turned on the democratic party. The state is now dominated by conservatives views. Manchin is a hold over from the bygone era. If not for his name and deep political connections, he would already be on the streets.

I am not taking a position on whether he should or should not be in office. I am just staring the democrats likely could not have a hope of getting anyone more left than him in office given the political environment in the state.
