this is really interestting to read since I agree but I get the impression we mean sorta opposite things. personally I'd think the game was better if you didn't really gain permanent upgrades at all. the amount of meta-progression and just general difference in power between your first run and your 30th is absurd for something that presents itself mostly as distinct runs

honestly I'd say if you're finding the game too simple but still interested in the core gamepaly to just skip forward on the heat slider a bunch. I was going for the reward at 32 and just going up one at a time, 70ish hours in and I was still nowhere near so I just skipped directly from 15ish to 32, beat it, and uninstalled the game <_<

still nowhere near the final ending/epilogue thing, that just takes an abusrd amount of gameplay

I think people just like the moment-to-moment action a lot. I certainly do, it's fast paced and punishing when you slip up and just generally the experience of playing the game is fun. Gotta seperate your enjoyment of the process from your enjoyment of the rewards to really like the game imo
