Yes, I think you can injure your rotator cuff with the bench press. I think it is similar to how you can injure your shoulders when doing other exercises like the lat pulldown or the overhead dumbbell press. It does seem odd, but I guess it has to do with not being warmed up, poor technique, too heavy a weight, etc.
