No. This was the ultimate role Gollum played in the salvation of Middle-Earth as foreshadowed by Gandalf; not even pure-hearted Frodo could bring himself to destroy the Ring willingly, so it took Gollum's uncontrollable mania over having finally reclaimed the Ring for him to accidentally destroy both it and himself (which was one of the minor changes over the source material that I didn't really care for in the movies: I wish Gollum had just slipped and fallen on his own accord instead of fighting with Frodo).

In the books he just slips and falls by happenstance?
