Parties get more or less control over these processes based on how elections go, so ultimately if McConnell was the majority leader, it's because his party holds more senate seats.

It all comes back to the fact that elections decide how these things shake out. The justices themselves are unelected, but they are nominated by and confirmed by people who are elected.

And now we circle back to the supreme court's perception as an apolitical body. Not, as you implied, because all nine of its members are meant to be utterly neutral, apolitical figures. But because they are supposed to be somewhat removed from the usual political power plays of the other branches.

You fail to understand what a disgusting blow to democracy McConnell dealt with his decision, and playing it off as "elections have consequences" just shows how far the court has fallen that you think this behavior is normal and/or in any way justified.
