Gain of function is a kind of research where an infectious agent, such a virus, is deliberately made more potent for the purpose of lab experiments.

One theory - which seemed plausible at one point but I believe is pretty much ruled out now (though I haven't been keeping the closest eye on that side of things) - was that the Wuhan virology institute was engaging in such research and developed SARS-CoV-2 (the covid virus) in the process, releasing it either deliberately (very few people ever took this possibility seriously) or via an accident (this one was a far more realistic scenario).

GoF research in general is a legitimate thing with many proper reason for doing it; as usual, misinformation pushers are trying to make out it's some evil thing that can ONLY be used for nefarious purposes.

So it's just the lab leak theory still going?
What does that have to do with fauci?
