Up until Angela mentioned getting Miami Metro involved, Dexter still thought he could talk his way out of it. When that was dropped, the noose tightened and he knew he wasn't getting out of it without a substantial investigation. That's when he determined he needed to escape, and set it up to get Logan alone and steal his keys.
