Actually, it was WWII when Mussolini tried to unify all of Italy, which wasn't considered one country until another date. The Italian language was an obscurity from one city-state, spoken by only a few of said location, until Dante wrote the Divine Comedy in that language; and even then the language didn't grow across the region of Italia until a few centuries later. Each city-state, be it Milano, Sicily, Venice, et al., had moved to their own languages during that time. Yet it was Mussolini who moved to make it the official language of the entire land.

If I had my sources handy, I'd share them right this moment, but I'm doing other things. So take what I've said here with a grain of salt.
