A very impressive and imposing window dressing that obviously garnered him a lot of attention, but treating his "death" in ROTJ as the culmination of his character arc or something is absolutely off-base, because he was never a "character" for those films. He was just a device to capture Han and move the gang to Tatooine for ROTJ.
