I like to say partner to help normalize it, for people in same-sex relationships who might want to refer to their SO in a particular context where they don't want to get into the whole thing.
Also partner doesn't sound cold at all to me, I think it's a fitting term for what being in a relationship is.

When I hear partner it brings up more questions in my head than if they just said who they were in a relationship with. I just think that if I was married or whatever Id want everyone to know lol. But everyone is different
