What's hilarious is we have actually had viable 3rd parties in the past, but they are usually driven out and killed by either the Democrats or Republicans because they are a threat to that party.

So let's say a new 3rd party rises up and it tends to favor more Republican votes than Democrat. The Republicans have a duty to eliminate that party because even if it only gets say about 5% of the total vote that could kill their chances of beating the Democrats in many races.

The two parties have such a strong foothold that they can easily eliminate any upstart parties that they feel are a threat to their future winning.
The only 3rd party I've ever heavily supported is the now defunct Modern Whig Party. It's sadly not surprising that the party that based it's core values around independent thought, didn't garner the support of general population. People really seem to like the binary hive mind model.
