So let's say a new 3rd party rises up and it tends to favor more Republican votes than Democrat. The two parties have such a strong foothold that they can easily eliminate any upstart parties that they feel are a threat to their future winning. The only 3rd party I've ever heavily supported is the now defunct Modern Whig Party. It's sadly not surprising that the party that based it's core values around independent thought, didn't garner the support of general population.
