Not really, the GOP is very hive minded. They are constantly working to try to maintain or improve the numbers of GOP elected officials. Trump worship is still a major litmus test for many right wing voters. Getting the big baby's blessing or at least an assurance of no attack from him is important towards their goal.

They had chances to destroy him on a silver platter and they chose to protect him instead. It shows that he has value to them.

I think they overstate it personally. He's proven to be a drag multiple times and any real losses to them would be minimal because the right wing voter base is easily manipulated and motivated, but this is the path they choose.
