It was fine compared to the ps1 OG controller with no sticks at all but its clearly inferior to a dual stick controller.

I remember playing goldeneye on the n64 controller and thinking "wow this is fun" then I got into PC gaming and played Half Life + it's mods (Counter Strike, Team Fortress, the golden age of modding) and I instantly knew the 64 controller was trash compared to the mouse and keyboard.

Later I played with console dual stick controllers and was able to make it work. But the silliness of that controller cannot be understated for certain genres. Holy the shoulder button and stand perfectly still if you want to aim a shot.
