Topic | I can still ignore preferred pronouns if they are Fae/Faer right |
Kenri 12/12/21 1:49:16 PM #265: | KamikazePotato posted... I'll say 'they' but I do think it was horrible branding that legitimately confuses some neutral people. It wouldn't have changed anything for the bigots, but overall it would've been better to just invent a new word.I mean... people tried! There are gender neutral neopronouns that date back to the 1800s*. But they didn't enter regular use while "they" did, which is just a linguistic thing, there's not really any way to control how language incorporates new words. *I had to fact check myself on this because I was like "they're older than people think, I want to say... 1970s" and then checked and NOPE "ze" is from 1864. That's as old as words like "homosexuality" and "girlfriend"! The one response I've found that seems to convert well-intentioned neutral people is to bring up that nobody uses "thou" anymore, we all just use the singular "you". No idea why this is more convincing than a 600-year history of using the singular "they" but in my experience it definitely is. --- Congrats to BKSheikah, who knows more about years than anyone else. ...
