Let's say you level up water magic. You get hp for leveling it or speed for wind. Now if you get like 6 water and 7 wind you get ice magic. Weapons are similar in that sense as well. Outside of the sprites the portraits and art of the world is really interesting and ever changing as you go from different places. Ruins in various places for example feel very different as if they were from different time periods or civilizations.
