Please don't get me wrong.

I love cover versions. I adore cover versions. I have, for my personal use, maintained multiple exceedingly pedantically curated playlists that include but are not exclusive to 1980s pop and synthpop.

This song does not feature on any of them.

This song was the herald of the death of the good cover. Since then, there's this weird delight in taking a good song and creating a tepid, mawkish and generally weak version of a song.

It's like taking a fistful of cigarette butts, sticking them in a sock and then sticking said sock into a mug full of cold water. You then let it steep for a bit. Then, pull the sock and cigarette butts out. Drink the ashy water over three and a half minutes, but call it a cup of tea.

That's what this cover did to the noble art of the good cover version.

This is now our cup of tea, apparently.
