Yeah, Bernard's training can be brutal. I forget if training with him causes bleeding that persists outside of training, but he should be able to beat up your armor and pride, at least. Luckily, there's a free-use bedroll near the east drawbridge if you haven't bought the inn bed. Speaking of which, try to always buy the inn bed so you have a good place to stash stuff -- something random beds don't allow for.

Sword and axe training causes no health damage, bleeding, injuries, or equipment damage. Mace training on the flipside will do all of that and it does persist after the training ends (aka he knocks you to like 10% health).

That said his repeatable combo training fully heals you when you do it. So you don't need to sleep or anything. Just mace training -> combo training on repeat. Also fight him either in your underwear or with some clothes you don't care about because they will get beaten up.
