They want to use that individual's popularity to sell tickets, but they also want to throw in as many references, subliminal or overt, as possible to imply that their home stock is better than the outsider. Since appearing in the MCU, Spider-Man has been the Robin to Iron Man's Batman. He's not allowed to be himself and shine on his own. He always needs to be reminding you how great the Disney-owned characters are.
